Summerville, GA

Summerville is the Chattooga County seat in northwest Georgia, on the Chattooga River at the western base of Taylor Ridge. The 2020 census counted 4,435 residents. The city was founded as the county seat in 1838, incorporated as a town in 1839, and became a city in 1909. US 27 connects Summerville with Chattanooga to the north and Rome to the southeast, giving the courthouse town a clear regional route. The center combines county work, older buildings, and recurring community events. The Chattooga County Courthouse, completed in 1909, stands at the center of the square, while the Summerville Commercial Historic District preserves the older business blocks.

The river still sets the town's western edge. Finster Fest brings art and music to Dowdy Park each year, and the Chattooga County School District operates three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school in the area. Summerville is a river county seat with a ridge behind it, a highway through it, and a downtown calendar that keeps the center in use.
