Summit Hill, PA

Summit Hill is a Carbon County borough on the crest of Pisgah Mountain, where anthracite coal was found in 1791 and mining began in earnest the following year. The 2020 census counted 3,120 residents. The first settlement was little more than a mining camp with stables and paddocks, but the coal seams pulled in the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company, workers, families, and the machinery that turned the Panther Valley into an industrial corridor.

Summit Hill was also the western terminus of the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, one of the earliest railways in the United States and a system built to carry coal down the mountain. The line gave Summit Hill a place in railway history far beyond its size, while the borough itself kept its streets on the ridge. Churches, schools, homes, and the old mining landscape still sit together on that high ground. The mines are closed now, but Summit Hill remains easy to read: coal under the mountain, rail technology on the slopes, and a borough built around both.
