Summitville, IN

Summitville is a town in Madison County, Indiana, with 989 residents in the 2020 census. It was laid out in 1867 and named for its relatively high ground in the surrounding White River country. The town sits about six miles north-northeast of Alexandria and seventeen miles north of Anderson, with Mud Creek’s headwaters and Pipe Creek leading toward the White River nearby. The town’s name still fits the setting, with the streets sitting above the creek bottoms and farm roads of Madison County.

Summitville’s small civic map includes a post office, Hazelbaker Library, Summitville Elementary School, local shops, and the roads that connect Van Buren Township to Madison County’s larger towns. Early industry included a tannery, sawmill, and gristmill before the town settled into its present residential and service pattern.
