Sumner, IL

Tucked away in southeastern Illinois' Lawrence County, Sumner is a quiet, close-knit rural community. While official census figures often include the nearby state correctional facility, the actual town is home to around 600 residents who enjoy a relaxed pace and an affordable cost of living. Established as a railroad stop in the 1850s, Sumner has held onto its small-town roots, offering peaceful residential streets and quick travel to neighboring towns along Illinois Route 250 and U.S. 50.

One of the biggest perks of living in Sumner is having Red Hills State Park practically in your backyard. Just minutes northeast of town, the park spans nearly a thousand acres of rolling hills, shaded ravines, and a peaceful 40-acre lake. It is a favorite spot for hiking, boating, fishing, and camping with more than a hundred campsites. Having such a scenic outdoor getaway right down the road gives residents plenty of open space to explore without leaving the area.
