Sun City is the original master-planned retirement community, situated just northwest of Phoenix in the West Valley. The town got its start on New Year's Day in 1960, when developer Del Webb unveiled five model homes and drew more than 100,000 visitors in a single weekend. That massive response proved there was huge demand for active retirement living, and resident-led boards quickly took over running community activities, earning Sun City its lasting nickname as the "City of Volunteers." One of the most convenient parts of daily life is the golf cart culture. Street-legal carts can drive on any neighborhood roads posted at 35 mph or under, making it simple to zip to the grocery store, pharmacy, post office, or Banner Boswell Medical Center. During pleasant spring evenings, residents gather for live music at the Sun Bowl amphitheater before events move into air-conditioned auditoriums for the summer.
