About Sundance

Sundance is Crook County's seat, a Black Hills town just south of the Bear Lodge Mountains. It began as a trading post in 1875, took its name from the Sun Dance ceremony, and later lent its name to Harry Longabaugh, the outlaw known as the Sundance Kid after his 1887 arrest here. Devils Tower lies north via the Bear Lodge country, so the town's map carries both Indigenous history and the old western travel route. Sundance is Wyoming in a county-seat-and-mountain shape.
