Sundown, TX

Sundown lies at the junction of Farm Roads 301 and 303 in southwestern Hockley County, fifteen miles southwest of Levelland. The town began as part of a ranching and farming landscape, then changed rapidly after oil drilling succeeded in 1937. Hockley County’s oil fields became some of the most productive in the region, and Sundown grew with the wells, service businesses, and workers who followed them. The flat horizon is agricultural, but the city’s history is inseparable from the petroleum beneath it.

Sundown Independent School District keeps education at the center of local routines, while farm roads and oil routes connect the town to Levelland and the South Plains. Cotton, grain, ranch work, and energy services overlap in the surrounding economy, with weather and commodity prices shaping the calendar alongside school and drilling activity. The city is small enough for the school, fields, and wells to sit in the same mental map. Sundown is a classic South Plains town in that sense: a community built where agriculture and oil meet under a wide sky.
