About Sunny Side

Sunny Side is a Spalding County census-designated place and former city with 203 residents in the 2020 census. A post office using the name opened in 1871, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated Sunny Side as a town in 1897. The name was applied as a hopeful description of the place, which grew within the farm country south of Griffin and within the wider Atlanta metropolitan area. Its civic status changed again in 2023, when the city was disincorporated and local duties moved to Spalding County.

The old town footprint is tiny—about 0.2 square mile—so Sunny Side's story is less about a large downtown than about a name and a community boundary that outlasted several forms of government. The post office gave the place an early address, incorporation supplied a municipal framework, and the current CDP preserves Sunny Side as a recognized settlement on the county map. Homes and roads sit among the agricultural and suburban edges of west-central Georgia, with Griffin serving as the county seat and nearby reference point. Sunny Side is a small place with a long civic afterlife.
