About Sunset Bay
Sunset Bay is a Chautauqua County hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Hanover, with 470 residents in 2020. It occupies the county's northern Lake Erie shore, where Cattaraugus Creek reaches the lake just north of the bay. The shoreline also meets the adjacent Cattaraugus Reservation. In 2012, the Seneca Nation ended a long-running arrangement that had allowed about 80 non-Native families to lease vacation homes at Snyder Beach, removing a seasonal settlement and bringing the reservation's land-lease authority into plain view.
Sunset Bay State Marine Park sits near the mouth of Cattaraugus Creek. Its boat launch, docks, marina, fishing access, seasonal cafe, and Lake Erie connection give the hamlet a working waterfront; Hanover Beach is within walking distance for summer swimming. The geography is unusually concentrated: the creek brings inland water to the lake, the bay opens north toward Lake Erie, and reservation land borders the town's shoreline. Sunset Bay is therefore shaped by water access and by the neighboring Seneca Nation's jurisdiction, with recreation, seasonal housing history, and a sovereign boundary sharing the same narrow edge of Hanover.
