Sunshine, CO

Sunshine is an unincorporated census-designated place in the hills northwest of Boulder, with Boulder County handling local government. The 2020 census counted 198 residents. The community grew around the Sunshine Mining District, discovered in 1870; gold and silver mines pushed the camp to about 1,200 people by 1876. The district's productive years ended as ore grades fell and operating costs rose, and the last mine closed in 1958. The town was incorporated in 1885 and returned to county governance in 1975, leaving homes, roads, and old mine sites spread across the same hillsides.

Sunshine School and Sunshine Cemetery are cared for by volunteers through the Sunshine Historical Society, which has held potlucks, craft fairs, holiday parties, and dances to support the properties. Boulder County lists Sunshine School and the Little Emily Mining Shack as historic sites. The Sunshine Fire Protection District adopted its first service plan in 1969, giving the unincorporated community a local public-service structure. Boulder remains the nearby regional center, while Sunshine's own map is made up of hillside homes, mining traces, a preserved schoolhouse, and the volunteer work that keeps those pieces connected.
