Sunsites, AZ

Sunsites is an unincorporated community beside Pearce in the Sulphur Springs Valley of Cochise County, at roughly 4,400 feet in Arizona's high desert. The two places are often spoken of together, but their stories are different: Pearce grew around James Pearce's 1894 gold discovery and the Commonwealth Mine, while Sunsites began in 1961 as a planned community developed by the Horizon Corporation. The result is a landscape where a mining ghost town, newer homes, and wide valley views share the same local map. Broad roads and an open valley horizon give Sunsites a look that is distinct from the older mining settlement.

The surrounding country reaches toward Cochise Stronghold, Chiricahua National Monument, and Whitewater Draw, which draws wintering sandhill cranes. Sunsites also has churches, restaurants, stores, a library, a medical clinic, and an 18-hole golf course. Vineyards and wineries have become part of the high-desert conversation, joining the older mining story with a newer agricultural interest. The two adjacent communities remain distinct, even though residents and visitors often use the combined name Pearce–Sunsites.
