About Superior

Superior is Mineral County’s seat on the northeast side of the Bitterroot Range, with the Clark Fork River running through downtown. The town took its name from Superior, Wisconsin, in 1869; a post office followed in 1871 after a regional gold strike drew miners and settlers. Mining and logging shaped the local economy, and the Mineral County Museum now keeps that history in the old hospital building. Interstate 90 ties Superior to Missoula and Idaho. Superior is a western Montana county seat where river, highway, and mineral history meet.
