Superior, WI (Village)

Superior is a village of its own in Douglas County, immediately south of the City of Superior and near Duluth. It incorporated in 1949 and has its own village president and two trustees, zoning board, building inspections, tax levy, streets, parks, ball fields, public works, and wastewater system. That list sounds procedural, but it is the local scoop: this is not a neighborhood department of the larger city next door. It is a separate municipality with its own day-to-day machinery.

The village office is on Ogden Avenue, and Merlin Public Library gives residents a local library stop. The park and ball-field system keeps recreation close to the homes, while the wastewater plant and street crews handle the unglamorous work that lets the village function. The Twin Ports are right outside the boundary, so residents share the broader Superior–Duluth setting without giving up a distinct municipal identity. Superior village is a compact place whose character comes less from landmarks than from knowing exactly where the village line is—and who takes care of what on its side of it.
