About Sutherland

Sutherland is a Lincoln County village on the Union Pacific line, platted in 1891 after the railroad reached the settlement. It sits in the North Platte area near the historic Oregon Trail and the Nebraska Sandhills, with Sutherland Reservoir adding a broad water mark to the otherwise rail-and-prairie map. Residents chose to remain a village in 1972 even after the place was large enough to become a second-class city. Sutherland is west-central Nebraska with a railroad beginning, a reservoir horizon, and a village name kept on purpose.
