Sutton-Alpine, AK

Sutton-Alpine is a census-designated place in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough of Alaska, located along the Glenn Highway roughly fifty-five miles northeast of Anchorage. The community includes the former coal mining town of Sutton and the former mining camps of Eska and Jonesville. Its earliest residents were Ahtna and Dena'ina Athabascans, who named the area with words meaning "where fish run among rocks." The CDP sits between Buffalo Soapstone to the west and Chickaloon to the east, flanked by the Matanuska River valley.
