Tahoka, TX

Tahoka is Lynn County’s seat on the South Plains, where U.S. 87 and U.S. 380 meet about twenty miles south of Lubbock. The 2020 census counted 2,375 residents. A 1902 gathering chose Tahoka as the future county-seat town, and the name is associated with a Native American word for fresh water. The railroad reached the county in the early 1910s, helping Tahoka grow from a new courthouse town into a farm and agribusiness center.

The Lynn County Courthouse marks the town square, while Tahoka ISD, Lynn County Hospital District, and Lyntegar Electric are among the institutions that keep the city working today. Cotton, grains, and other crops shape the roads beyond town, and the Tahoka Daisy gives the area a small botanical signature. Tahoka has the wide-horizon feel of the South Plains: a county seat with a grid of streets, a school and hospital near the center, and farm country running straight out toward the horizon. The horizon is part of daily life.
