Taholah, WA

Taholah is an unincorporated village on the Quinault Indian Reservation in Grays Harbor County, where the Quinault River meets the Pacific Ocean. The river and ocean have long shaped Quinault life, carrying food, travel, and work into a coastal setting that is as powerful as it is exposed. The Quinault Indian Nation moved its headquarters to Taholah from the town of Quinault on Lake Quinault, and the lower village now holds the K-12 school, mercantile, post office, cannery, offices, and other daily services.

That same shoreline has made relocation part of Taholah's present story. The lower village lies in areas exposed to river flooding, storm surge, and a Cascadia Subduction Zone tsunami. A seawall faces the ocean, while the Quinault Nation has planned a new village on roughly 200 acres of higher ground about a half-mile inland. The move is meant to keep homes, elders, children, and essential services connected while giving the community more room to withstand coastal hazards. Taholah's story is therefore rooted in both continuity and movement: a Quinault village at the mouth of the river, carrying its school and community institutions forward as the shoreline forces a new chapter.
