About Tall Timber

Tall Timber is an unincorporated Boulder County community and CDP in the hills west of Boulder, with 185 residents in the 2020 census. Sugarloaf Road runs through the middle of the community, dropping south toward Colorado 119 and continuing west toward Sugarloaf and the Peak to Peak Highway. The Boulder post office serves the area, so mail, roads, and county services matter more here than a separate town center. The surrounding Sugar Loaf Fire Protection District covers 17 square miles, nearly 600 homes, Boulder County Open Space, city mountain parks, and several thousand acres of Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests.

Its volunteer department handles the practical mountain work, including vehicle accidents, wildfires, lost hikers, and medical calls. The district also includes a water treatment plant for the city of Boulder, tying this hillside community to a larger regional utility map. For residents, the local map is a set of forest roads, hillside neighborhoods, and access routes into the Boulder area, with open land beginning close to the homes.
