Taos Ski Valley, NM

Tucked high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at over 9,000 feet, Taos Ski Valley is an intimate alpine village carved out along the Rio Hondo. Long before modern chairlifts and slope-side lodges arrived, the area started as a rugged 19th-century mining camp named Twining. Legendary skiers Ernie and Rhoda Blake put down roots here in the 1950s, building the ski resort that still anchors daily life in the canyon. It officially incorporated as an independent village in 1996, giving the small cluster of homes, condos, and local businesses its own municipal identity separate from the historic town of Taos down the mountain.

Life up here revolves around the seasons, mountain air, and dramatic elevation. In the winter, the village fills with skiers and snowboarders tackling some of the steepest terrain in North America, while summers draw hikers heading up to Wheeler Peak and mountain bikers riding the alpine trails. Year-round residency is very small, hovering around a few hundred people who value seclusion, stunning scenery, and quiet shoulder seasons. Living in the canyon requires a bit of mountain readiness, from navigating snowy drives on Route 150 to heading into town for major groceries, but residents get an authentic alpine setting right outside their front door.
