Tappahannock, VA

Tappahannock is Essex County’s seat and one of Virginia’s oldest towns, with 2,193 residents in the 2020 census on the southwest bank of the tidal Rappahannock River. The name comes from an Algonquian word for “cold-water creek,” and the town grew as a colonial port with tobacco warehouses. Captain John Smith landed here in 1608, an encounter that belongs to the town’s story alongside the Rappahannock people who were already living in the region. U.S. Routes 17 and 360 now carry the regional traffic. Downtown Tappahannock puts the river and commerce in the same frame, with locally owned shops, restaurants, county services, and seasonal markets and festivals.

The town’s four parks spread the waterfront outward: Rappahannock River Park and Duke Street Beach face the river, Marsh Street Beach adds another shoreline stop, and Central Park has pickleball and tennis courts, a playground, splash pad, and pavilions.
