Tarkio, MO

Tarkio was laid out by Charles E. Perkins in August 1880, platted that year, and incorporated in 1881 in Atchison County. Its name comes from a Meskwaki word associated with a place where walnuts grow, a fitting bit of language for a town set amid the farm country of northwest Missouri. Tarkio College opened in 1883 as a Presbyterian institution and shaped local life for more than a century before closing in 1991. The old Mule Barn became the Tarkio Mule Barn Theatre, a memorable college-era conversion before fire destroyed it in 1989.

Today Tarkio is a compact agricultural city with homes, churches, shops, schools, civic services, and roads leading across Atchison County. The college grounds and surviving buildings remain part of the town’s memory, while current routines revolve around farming, local organizations, school activities, and trips to larger nearby communities for work and shopping. The walnut name, college history, and mule-barn story give Tarkio more layers than its size suggests. Its present-day rhythm is still grounded in the surrounding fields and in the people who keep a small county town going.
