Tchula, MS

Tchula is a town in western Holmes County, Mississippi, along Tchula Lake, an old river channel in the Mississippi Delta. The 2020 census counted 1,652 residents. U.S. 49E passes through the center, connecting Tchula with Greenwood to the north and Yazoo to the southwest. The lake, flat farm country, and Highway 49E define the town’s geography. Holmes County School District serves local students, and a Mississippi Blues Trail marker at the southern entrance points to the musicians who lived and worked in the area.

The first permanent settlement dates to the 1830s, and the town took its name from Tchula Lake. During the segregation era, Tchula and the surrounding Delta were a gathering place for blues performers, including Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, and Jimmy Dawkins. That music history sits beside the harder story of plantation agriculture, farm labor, and the loss of jobs that changed the town over the twentieth century. Tchula remains a Holmes County town where the lake, the highway, and the Blues Trail meet in a landscape shaped by both music and farming.
