Teague, TX

Teague is a Freestone County city of 3,384 residents in the 2020 census, nine miles southwest of Fairfield at the junction of U.S. 84, State Highway 179, and Farm Roads 80 and 145. The place began as Brewer, a small settlement that changed shape when the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway arrived in 1906 with machine and car shops. Railroad magnate Benjamin Franklin Yoakum renamed it Teague for his mother and her family, and the city incorporated in 1907. Cotton made Teague a shipping center, and the old rail-and-agricultural combination still defines the city’s regional role.

The city’s schools serve the area from pre-K through 12th grade, while the Burlington-Rock Island Railroad Museum keeps the division-point story tied to a 1906 depot. Main Street follows State 179 through town, and Fairfield supplies the county-seat orbit just up the road. The local scoop is an East Texas railroad city whose name, street grid, museum, and school system all grew from the same early-20th-century boom.
