About Tecumseh

Tecumseh is the Johnson County seat, with a courthouse-square town plan and a school district that now reaches well beyond the city. The settlement was first called Frances when it was established in 1856; Nebraska's territorial legislature made Tecumseh the county seat in 1857, and the city took the name of the Shawnee leader. Johnson County Central Public Schools formed in 2007 from the merger of Tecumseh Public Schools and Nemaha Valley Schools, with its central office, elementary, and high school in town. The Tecumseh Airport adds a smaller aviation note to the map. Tecumseh is a southeast Nebraska county-seat town where the square, the school, and the old name change remain easy to trace.
