Tenafly, NJ

Tenafly’s hills and valleys shaped the borough’s street plan: east of downtown, East Hill rises to the New Jersey Palisades above the Hudson River, facing the Bronx. Dutch immigrants began settling the area in the late seventeenth century, and the name Tenafly is Dutch in origin; one proposed derivation is Tiene Vly, or “Ten Swamps,” recorded by settlers in 1688. New Jersey incorporated Tenafly from Palisades Township on January 24, 1894. It was Bergen County’s first borough formed during the 1894 “Boroughitis” wave, when 26 boroughs were created in the county.
