Teutopolis, IL

Teutopolis is an Effingham County village with 1,618 residents in the 2020 census, built in 1839 by German immigrants along the old National Road, now US 40. The name means “City of the Teutons,” and the village still carries that origin in its straight Main Street plan, German Catholic roots, and “Wooden Shoes” nickname. It is the only U.S. community with this name and sits within three miles of Effingham, so the village keeps its own center while county errands and regional jobs sit close by.
