Texhoma, OK

Texhoma is a town with the state line running through its middle: the Oklahoma side and Texhoma, Texas, share a name, streets, schools, and a history that does not fit neatly inside one state. The name combines Texas and Oklahoma. The Rock Island Railroad reached the area in 1902, after the post office at Loretta was moved and renamed Texhoma. Ranching, grain, and livestock shipping grew around the tracks, turning open Panhandle country into a border town with a depot on the line.

An unusual bi-state school arrangement serves students on both sides, so school buses and family routines cross the same boundary that marks the town on maps. Local work still connects to ranches, farms, elevators, transportation, and county services, with Guymon supplying the larger Oklahoma-side retail and employment base. Texhoma’s border location is part of the daily practical story: mail, addresses, business affiliations, and community events have to account for two states while residents share one town. It is a place where the line is visible, but not enough to divide ordinary life.
