Texico, NM

Texico sits on the New Mexico side of the Texas border, with Farwell directly across the line. The city is part of Curry County and lies on the high plains of the Llano Estacado, where the horizon stays broad and the state line is part of the everyday map. The name itself is a blend of Texas and New Mexico. State roads and the nearby regional centers of Clovis and Farwell tie Texico to a two-state working area, while the town’s own schools operate through Texico Municipal Schools.

The settlement began with the railroad. Ira W. Taylor, a section foreman for the Pecos Valley and Northeastern Railroad, claimed land here in the early 1900s; the post office opened in 1902, followed by a hotel, blacksmith shop, and the boom around the Belen Cutoff. Texico’s border history has a little western drama too: Farwell grew across the line on titled land while Texico developed on an unsurveyed strip, creating a rivalry that still makes the twin towns a favorite local story. With 956 residents in 2020, Texico remains small, but its location gives it a larger horizon.
