Thayer, MO

Thayer is an Oregon County city on the Warm Fork Spring River, next to Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. The 2020 census counted 1,883 residents. Its original name was Augusta, and the post office has operated since 1884, yet rail is the through-line: Thayer was established in 1882 as a division point for the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, named after promoter Nathaniel Thayer, and grew around railroad work linking Springfield and Memphis. The city grew from rail movement into a service point for Oregon County and the communities along the state line.

That border location still shapes the town's orbit. Thayer R-II School District, the Thayer Branch Library, and city government give the Missouri side its own civic center, while Mammoth Spring sits immediately across the state line.
