Thoreau, NM

Thoreau is a census-designated place in central McKinley County, within the Navajo Nation. At roughly 7,140 feet above sea level and five miles east of the Continental Divide, it sits in a broad valley below an Entrada sandstone escarpment. The settlement began as Mitchell; the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad gave it the Thoreau name when a station was established, and a post office followed in 1899. The high-desert setting and the old rail connection are still the two quickest ways to place it on a map.

Thoreau also runs through its Chapter and the school network serving eastern McKinley County. Thoreau Elementary, Middle, and High School serve the place and nearby rural communities. At an October 2025 Chapter meeting, residents spoke with Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren about local issues, development, and next steps; newer housing work in the community shows that the conversation is still active. For a first visit, think of Thoreau as a high-elevation Navajo community with a chapter house, schools, sandstone country, and a history that arrived by rail but kept growing around local needs.
