About Thorp
Thorp is a Clark County city established in 1876, spread across parts of the Towns of Thorp and Withee. Before the town took shape, the surrounding forest was Ojibwe territory, and Thorp’s timeline begins with James Seneca Boardman’s arrival in 1870, followed by a school, store, and post office in 1873. The railroad was being surveyed by 1879, and about 1887 the York Iron Company built kilns near town to turn local hardwood into charcoal for its Black River Falls smelter. The Thorp Area Historical Museum carries that frontier, railroad, and industrial story under one roof.
