Three Lakes, WI

Set in Wisconsin's Northwoods just nine miles south of Eagle River, Three Lakes is a relaxed community of around 600 full-time residents. The town got its name in the 1880s when railroad surveyors had to steer around Maple Lake, Town Line Lake, and Range Line Lake. Those tracks helped put the settlement on the map, and today Three Lakes serves as the southern anchor for the 28-lake chain connecting all the way north to Eagle River. Downtown sits right around the junction of U.S. 45 and Highway 32, giving locals an easy drive to regional amenities while keeping day-to-day life quiet and unhurried.

The area originally grew as a logging camp before clearing gave way to family potato farming in the early 1900s. As commercial farming wound down, extensive replanting programs helped the surrounding pine and hardwood forests recover across the township. Today, those thick woods surround quiet lakefront homes, residential acreage, and scenic backroads that stay green and peaceful through the warmer months.

Life here naturally revolves around the outdoors. Summers bring pontoon rides, kayaking, and fishing across the chain of lakes, while winters offer snowmobiling, ice fishing, and quiet cross-country ski trails right out the back door. Downtown has a genuine small-town feel, home to local diners, everyday service shops, and a well-known fruit winery.
