Tilghman Island, MD

Tilghman Island is a Talbot County island at the end of Maryland's Bay Hundred peninsula, a low strip of land shaped by the Chesapeake. It was once called Great Choptank Island, then took the Tilghman name after Matthew Tilghman's family acquired it in the eighteenth century. For generations it was a farm; in the nineteenth century, oystering, crabbing, and fishing pulled more families toward the water. Black Walnut Point at the southern tip now gives the island a state-managed shoreline and wide Bay views. Tilghman is the Eastern Shore in a watermen-and-oyster story.
