Tilton, IL

Tilton is a Vermilion County village on Illinois Route 1 and Interstate 74, part of the Danville metropolitan area. It was laid out as Bryant in 1854 along the Northern Cross Railroad; the name later changed to Tilton in honor of L. Tilton, the railroad’s manager. The old rail connection still marks the present-day map: Illinois Route 1, Interstate 74, the rail corridor, and the Vermilion River meet around a village whose identity grew from transportation.

Tilton also carries an Abraham Lincoln story. One local tradition says Lincoln reportedly had Thanksgiving dinner at a Tilton home in the 1850s, and the story stays attached to the village alongside its railroad beginnings. Current recreation centers on Herschel Lake, the Vermilion River, an ATV park, festivals, and the village’s several parks, while village government and nearby Danville handle the larger regional services. Tilton’s present-day map brings together an old rail name, a major east–west highway, river-and-lake recreation, and a small village set against the Danville area.
