Tiltonsville, OH

Tiltonsville sits along the Ohio River in Jefferson County, in the long valley between Steubenville and the West Virginia line. John Tilton purchased 900 acres at a Pittsburgh land auction in 1796 and laid out the village in 1806, giving the place its name and its first street pattern. The river made the settlement part of the Ohio Valley's movement of people, coal, steel, and freight. A post office appeared as Tiltonville in 1852; the name became Tiltonsville in 1875.

Today the village is part of the Weirton-Steubenville metropolitan area, with the river still defining its western edge and the Buckeye Local School District connecting students across the surrounding communities. The Tiltonsville branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County gives the town a local library stop, while roads along the river lead to larger jobs, shopping, and services. Homes, churches, the library, school routes, and river industry fill in a place whose shape was set by one land purchase nearly 230 years ago.
