Timpson, TX

Timpson is a Shelby County city built around the Houston, East and West Texas Railway, which reached the new town in 1885. Railroad official Paul C. Timpson laid out the community, and the first passenger train arrived on August 1 of that year. Two stores opened beside the tracks, a pine thicket became the town square, and Timpson quickly grew into a shipping center for East Texas timber, cotton, and lignite. The 2020 census counted 989 residents.

U.S. 59 and U.S. 84 now meet at Timpson, while the older street grid still follows the railroad at an angle instead of lining up with the compass. City Hall sits on Railroad Avenue, keeping the original transportation reference point in the present-day city. Timpson Independent School District serves local students, and the Timpson High School Bears remain part of the town's identity. The rail shipments faded as highways took over, but the square, the angled streets, and the timber-country setting still show how the railroad built Timpson.
