Tipton, MO

Tipton sits in western Moniteau County at the junction of U.S. 50 and Missouri 5, five miles east of Syracuse and 12 miles west of California, the county seat. It is part of the Jefferson City metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 2,920 residents. Tipton's older identity comes from its predominantly German-American population and its place in the Missouri Weinstrasse. In 1858, when the Butterfield Overland Mail began, Tipton served as its eastern terminus, tying this highway crossroads to a much larger overland mail route. North Moreau Creek and Moniteau Creek add the local geography behind the road network.

Tipton R-VI School District handles public education in town, and the Price James Library gives the center a civic institution with a distinctly local origin. Olive Ashurst donated the building and grounds, and a 1981 endowment created the library for Tipton and surrounding communities; a 2002 wing added children's materials and program space. The library now holds about 15,000 items. With county business in nearby California and major routes meeting in town, Tipton combines a regional road role with school, library, and neighborhood routines that remain focused on its own small center.
