Tivoli, NY

Tivoli is the northernmost settlement in Dutchess County, a village whose 2020 census count was 1,012 people, tucked against the Hudson River in the town of Red Hook. It was incorporated in 1872 from two older communities, Upper Red Hook Landing and Madalin, and its name came from Tivoli, the estate modeled after the gardens in Rome. The river shaped the village early, first through landing traffic, then through ice harvesting, mills, and seasonal work tied to New York City. You can still feel that river logic in the village’s narrow geography and old architecture.

All of Tivoli lies within the Hudson River National Historic Landmark District, a designation that covers the riverfront landscape between Staatsburg and Germantown. At Tivoli Landing, the village meets the water, while the local waterfront plan now looks at access, former railroad land, and the relationship between homes, streets, and the river. The little red schoolhouse chapter is part of the texture too: a schoolhouse stood on Broadway before the current building replaced it in 1915. Tivoli is small, but its setting keeps widening the view—Hudson water in front, Catskill Mountains beyond, and a nineteenth-century village plan underneath.
