About Toast
Toast is an unincorporated Surry County community and census-designated place just west of Mount Airy, with 1,423 residents in 2020. It sits in the foothill country around the northern edge of the county, where roads move between farms, wooded slopes, and the larger service center of Mount Airy. Toast has had a post office since 1929, giving the community a long-running address of its own even as daily errands, schools, and many county connections lead toward Mount Airy.
The name is the part everybody remembers. Local tradition says the Post Office Department supplied Toast as the name in the late 1920s. Another oft-told version credits E. P. McLeod, a school principal, who supposedly suggested it while buying groceries at Hutchens Store in 1927. Whether you hear the story as fact or family lore, it gives Toast a memorable place in Surry County conversation. The surrounding landscape is the real constant: small roads, farms, creek bottoms, and Blue Ridge foothill views. Toast works best as a place to notice on the map and then explore slowly, with Mount Airy’s shops, music, and local history close by.
