Tomales, CA

Tomales is a small Marin County community on State Route 1, set above Keys Creek a few miles northeast of Tomales Bay. The local landscape is a meeting point of coastal pasture, dairy country, and the long road between west Marin and Sonoma County. Coast Miwok people lived around Tomales Bay before European settlement, and the name is tied to the Coast Miwok word tamal, associated with bay country. The Tomales Regional History Center, housed in the old 1921 high-school auditorium, keeps that layered regional story close at hand.

For day-to-day life, Tomales looks to the Shoreline Unified School District. Tomales Elementary covers kindergarten through eighth grade, while Tomales High is the district's only 9-12 school and draws students from a wide stretch between Point Reyes and Bodega Bay. The town hall remains an event space, and Route 1 links the village with Petaluma, about 16 miles east, and the larger San Francisco region farther south. Tomales has a tiny-town footprint, but its community institutions serve a broad coastal hinterland: school, history center, town hall, ranch roads, and the bay just over the rise.
