Tonawanda’s geography is shaped entirely by the water that surrounds it. Tonawanda Creek, carrying the western end of the Erie Canal, divides the City of Tonawanda from its sister city, North Tonawanda, right where the canal flows into the Niagara River facing Grand Island. Most of the action centers around Gateway Harbor and the historic downtown blocks along Main and Niagara streets, while Niawanda Park stretches along the riverbank to the south.
