About Tonawanda Town

The Town of Tonawanda contains the incorporated village of Kenmore but is separate from the City of Tonawanda on its northern edge, a distinction behind the shared local shorthand “Ken-Ton.” Created in 1836, the town included the present-day city until that municipality separated in 1903. Its boundaries make water part of the town's geography: the Niagara River lies to the west, Tonawanda Creek and the Erie Canal corridor to the north, and Ellicott Creek crosses the northern section before meeting Tonawanda Creek near the river. The town sits along the former bed and west-southwest shoreline of glacial Lake Tonawanda. It is an inner-ring Buffalo suburb, with the city of Buffalo along part of its southern boundary. A former Erie Lackawanna rail corridor now provides a continuous walking and cycling spine through the community. The Tonawanda Rails to Trails project opened a roughly four-mile paved route from Kenmore Avenue through the town to State Street in the city of Tonawanda, and a later extension connected it with the Erie Canalway Trail.

Along the western side of town, the Riverwalk follows the Niagara River and links town recreation sites with the larger regional shoreline system. Indoor and outdoor recreation is spread across several municipal facilities. The Aquatic and Fitness Center has a 50-meter indoor pool, a wading pool, and fitness space; Brighton and Sheridan Park remain town-managed 18-hole golf courses, while neighborhood parks provide fields, playgrounds, pools, and picnic shelters. The Tonawanda-Kenmore Historical Society adds a different kind of public space at its museum in an 1849 former German Evangelical church. Kenmore's village government and center are nested within this wider network of town facilities, trails, and waterfront access.
