Torreon CDP (Torrance County), NM

Torreon is a farming-community census-designated place in Torrance County, New Mexico, on NM 55 along the eastern slopes of the Manzano Mountains. The road threads through older land-grant communities south of Estancia, linking Torreon with Tajique, Manzano, and Mountainair. The high-desert setting is agricultural, with the mountains close on one side and broad Torrance County roads opening east and south. The route also carries residents toward county services and neighboring villages along the valley.

Torreon's history reaches into the centuries before its modern Census label. The site was once a Piro pueblo and later part of the Salinas mission district; in spring 1841, Nino Antonio Montoya and 26 farmers resettled it under a New Mexico land grant. Today the community remains tied to farming, NM 55, and Estancia Municipal Schools, whose district includes Torreon.
