Trenton, TX

Trenton is a small city in Fannin and Grayson counties, twelve miles southwest of Bonham and close to the three-county line. Its first settlers came from Tennessee in 1852, when the area was known as Wild Cat Thicket for the dense woods and abundant wildlife. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad arrived in 1881, the same year the post office opened, and the town soon shipped cotton, corn, and oats from surrounding farms. U.S. Route 69 and State Highway 121 now carry the through traffic. The 2020 census counted 743 residents.

Trenton Independent School District gives the city a strong civic center, with Trenton High School’s Tigers name running through school events and local memory. The Fannin County Historical Commission places the town at the gateway to the county, a description that still fits its position between Bonham, Greenville, and the Grayson County line. Trenton’s map holds several eras together: a settlement in the thicket, a railroad shipping point, a farm-market town, and a school community gathered along the highways.
