Trenton, UT

Trenton sits at the northwestern edge of Cache Valley, near the Bear River and within the Logan, Utah-Idaho metro. Cache Valley's older story includes Shoshone gathering and travel; Mormon settlement followed in the 1850s and 1860s. The McCombs family settled near the Bear River in 1869, and the first real Trenton settlement began in 1872. Bishop William B. Preston named it for Trenton, New Jersey, because several early settlers had come from there. The 2020 population was 512.

Before irrigation, the area was a grazing range and sat on the freight road from Corinne to Montana, a major route out of the valley. Trenton's first school met in Andrew McCombs's home, then moved to a log schoolhouse; residents traded in Weston, Idaho, and reached Logan by fording the Bear River at Reese Ferry. The river sat lower than the settlement, so wells and dry farming carried the place until an irrigation company formed in 1898. That practical water problem still gives Trenton its shape: a small farming town whose history runs along the river, across the valley road, and into the canal system.
