Tribes Hill, NY

Tribes Hill is a hamlet and census-designated place in Montgomery County, mainly in the town of Mohawk with a smaller section in Amsterdam. The 2020 census counted 937 residents. The community sits on a hill above the north bank of the Mohawk River, across from Glen and Florida, with the river valley opening toward the Capital Region. Its roads connect through the Mohawk Valley while local government remains divided between two towns.

The name is commonly connected to the Mohawk Valley’s Indigenous history; one tradition holds that the hill was a gathering place for the Mohawk nation. The town of Mohawk rises from the river flats toward the uplands, and the hamlet’s position gives it a broad view across the valley. Today Tribes Hill is a small residential crossroads with the river below, farms and hills around it, and larger shopping and services in Amsterdam, Fonda, and nearby towns. The place’s local feel comes from that high-bank position: a community looking across the water at the valley that carried people, trade, and conflict for centuries.
