Trimble, MO

Trimble is a city in southwestern Clinton County, with 573 residents in the 2020 census, within the Kansas City metropolitan area. Missouri Route F and U.S. 169 run through town, and Smithville Lake lies about a mile east on the Little Platte River. County pages call Trimble “the Little Town on the Lake,” a fitting shorthand for its relationship to the reservoir, the lake’s recreation areas, and Honker Cove Waterfowl Refuge. Clinton County R-III serves most local households, connecting the small city to the wider rural school network.

Trimble began as Carpenter’s Store, whose post office opened in 1858. When the railroad reached the trading point, the town was laid out and renamed for J. McD. Trimble, a railroad official. The post office adopted Trimble in 1899. Decades later, Smithville Lake filled in 1979, turning the Little Platte valley and its farm ponds into a 7,200-acre reservoir. Trimble’s identity now sits at the meeting of two scales: a small highway-and-school town in Clinton County and a lake community within Kansas City’s orbit.
