Troy, KS

Troy is a city and the county seat of Doniphan County, Kansas, in the St. Joseph, Missouri–Kansas metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 964 residents. The city sits in northeastern Kansas near the Missouri border, with county roads and the larger river-country map pulling toward St. Joseph. Troy USD 429 serves local students, while the courthouse and county offices give the city a role beyond its size. The courthouse square keeps that county role visible in town. Local streets lead to the square.

Troy was platted in 1855, the same year Doniphan County was established, and the town became the county seat. Its name honors Troy of ancient Greece, a classical label set down on a prairie county seat. Today the city’s daily life still follows that early arrangement: a courthouse town surrounded by farm country, with schools, roads, and county business gathering people from across Doniphan County. Troy is a small northeastern Kansas city whose importance comes from being the county’s meeting place.
