Truman, MN

Truman sits in northeastern Martin County along Minnesota Highway 15, about thirteen miles north of Fairmont. The town was platted in 1899 as the railroad came through, and local history connects its name to Truman Whited, one of the original surveyors. What began as a rail settlement became a small farm-market city, with the highway now carrying the everyday traffic that once gathered around the tracks.

Today Truman has an independent school district, Otto Graf Park, a historical museum, local clubs, churches, and the ordinary services of a southern Minnesota farm community. Fairmont is close enough for larger shopping, health care, and county business, while Madelia lies north along the same regional route. The surrounding fields set the pace for much of the year, but school activities, museum hours, volunteer groups, and park time give the city a local calendar beyond planting and harvest. Truman’s story is a familiar Minnesota combination of rail, farm country, and a town that keeps its own institutions close at hand.
