Tukwila, WA

The Green-Duwamish River, Interstate 5, Interstate 405, Link light rail, Sounder commuter rail, and the approach to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport all pass through or beside Tukwila. That convergence gives a city of 21,798 residents in 2020 an employment and shopping footprint much larger than its population. The city's 2026 economic profile reports more than 40,000 jobs, with major concentrations in retail, manufacturing, and aerospace. Westfield Southcenter sits amid the largest commercial district. The city also reports hundreds of small businesses, many owned by members of its international communities. Transit connects those activity centers in several directions. Tukwila International Boulevard Station serves the Link 1 Line and multiple bus routes; Tukwila Station at Longacres serves Sounder's S Line. King County Metro's 2026 RapidRide F Line links both stations with Southcenter, Burien, SeaTac, and Renton, and Route 150 runs from Southcenter toward downtown Seattle and Kent. At the city's north edge beside Boeing Field, the Museum of Flight adds air- and space-history exhibits to an area still associated with aerospace work.

The river corridor carries a much older story. Duwamish people built cedar longhouses along the waterways and used this meeting point for travel and trade well before settlers arrived. Joseph Foster's nineteenth-century home site lies within Fort Dent Park, now one of a city network that also includes Duwamish Gardens, Duwamish Hill Preserve, Tukwila Pond, and the Community Center. Parks and recreation manages more than 150 acres of open space, parks, and multiuse trails. In July and August 2026, a Sunday farmers market at the Community Center brought produce, bouquets, preserves, honey, and mushrooms, including crops important to local cultural communities. Green Tukwila adds restoration work parties and free plant walks, birding, nature journaling, science, and art programs while pursuing a long-term plan to restore 138 acres of urban forest.
